The recent 40th Iceland Fisheries, Seafood and Aqua Exhibition in Reykjavik, Iceland

September 23, 2024

Representing Grimsby Fish Merchants Association and Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance, Simon Dwyer attended the 40th Iceland Fisheries, Seafood and Aqua Exhibition in Reykjavik, Iceland. "It was an opportunity to meet predominantly Icelandic businesses operating with direct fish sales to Grimsby or within the supply chain" commented Simon.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Icelandic Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdottir (pictured), who discussed with Simon the strong trade links between Iceland and Grimsby. Plus, they spoke about the recent Grimsby Town FC signing of Iceland footballer Jason Svanthorsson.
Concurrently, the Fish Waste for Profit, 100% Utilisation of Fish Conference was held in the Icelandic capital. Entitled, 'Transforming the Blue Economy to 100% Green', the conference looked at how the industry is working towards full utilisation of fish by-products and taking steps in the use of green technology.
Presentations included UK organisations, Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability as well as Seafood Scotland. Simon added  "Speakers from around the world spoke passionately about developing new technologies and the impact of developing worldwide partnerships to accelerate the opportunities with full utilisation of fish. It's an initiative pioneered by the Reykjavik headquartered, Iceland Ocean Cluster that we're continually engaging with."
Icelandic fisheries companies send annually approximately 40,000 tonnes of predominantly fresh and frozen haddock and cod destined for Grimsby and the Humber region. The Humber ports of Hull and Immingham operated by Associated British Ports are the main landing points.
