Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance (SGHA) have been the custodian of the Fishmongers' Company, Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS) since the start of 2024. The recent MFS luncheon awards celebration at Fishmongers' Hall, was an opportunity for over 40 Master Fishmongers to recognise new awards for eleven colleagues. Prime Warden, Andrew Sutcliffe KC, welcomed guests to the luncheon along with Dr Eleanor Adamson, Fishmongers' Company Fish & Fisheries team and Simon Dwyer who spoke about SGHA ambition to work alongside the MFS accredited Fishmongers to promote the craft and encourage more from the fish and seafood industry to take up the various accredited standards.

The Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance (SGHA) and Seafish Industry Authority hosted a webinar introducing the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool to a range of seafood suppliers, processors, and retailers. The tool, which enables users to quantify the carbon emissions in their product supply chains, identify hotspots, and demonstrate seafood’s position as the lowest carbon source of animal protein. Importantly, this tool has been backed by all of the major seafood processors in the UK, an example of the pre-competitive collaboration driven by the SGHA, that places the seafood industry in an advantageous position compared to other sectors of the food industry, where multiple emissions calculators can be found for individual products.

Statistics released recently have reconfirmed the Humber’s position as the UK’s leading centre for seafood and one that’s showing real growth. ABP’s Humber ports of Immingham, Grimsby and Hull handled 41.6% of the fish imported into the UK, showing a 10.5% growth year on year, demonstrating the strong proposition of the Humber ports as a leading gateway for UK trade.

It's been a busy month for the Made Great in Grimsby Schools Ambassador, Joanne Woodhouse, as focus and attention switched to educating young people and teachers about careers in seafood and the wider sector opportunities. Over 1900 year 10 students from the region visited the North East Lincolnshire Council Skills Fair which included the Made Great in Grimsby seafood village. This was the second year the presence from the seafood industry was there and again, we had a great response from all who visited. The village had representatives from Hilton Seachill, Young's Seafood, Northcoast Seafoods, Eurofins, New England Seafoods, University of Lincoln and Seafish Industry Authority. Together with the businesses, the Made Great in Grimsby team of Joanne Woodhouse and Julie Waites, presented educational materials, prizes and insights into many career opportunities and job roles working in the regional seafood cluster.
